Hand Bell Choir

The Bell Choir at Hawker Church is an instrumental music ensemble comprised of approximately a dozen ringers who are members or regular attendees of Hawker. The group’s purpose is to promote and assist the worship of our Lord through the use of Hand Bell music in our services. The group has a long tradition of outstanding holiday performances.

Hand bells were created in England to

provide a practice instrument

for the carillons.

It was impractical for the carillonneurs

to spend their practice hours actually

ringing the carillon in the unheated towers

for everyone to hear,

so they created miniature versions of

the bells

to be played by hand inside.

A hand bell ensemble is basically an

instrument that takes at least ten people

to play. It takes coordination,

good rhythm

and fun rehearsals

to have a successful hand bell choir.

The Hand Bell Choir plays at special and occasional services at Hawker Church. We invite you to join us, whatever your age or musical experience. The Hand Bell Choir is an entry-level choir focusing on basic handbell techniques and offer a way to enrich the worship. Our Ringers enjoy learning music of all levels.

Anyone desiring to become a member of the Hand Bell Choir is encouraged to do so. The Bell Choir is open to interested ringers from 7th grade through adults. Reading music is not a requirement for participation in the group, but a background in instrumental or vocal music would certainly allow a new ringer to learn more easily.

Rehearsals are on Tuesdays at 7pm in the Music Room.
